Who the Buffalo Soldiers Were
On July 28, 1866, Congress established the peacetime regiments that became known as the Buffalo Soldiers — the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry. They served across the American West escorting wagon trains, building roads and telegraph lines, mapping unknown country and protecting settlements, and later served with distinction overseas. They fought racism and injustice at the same time they served, and they never backed down.
This collection carries their story across every format we make. The calendar also carries Sergeant George Jordan of the 9th Cavalry, a Medal of Honor recipient born into slavery who defended Fort Tularosa in 1880, and Cathay Williams, who enlisted as "William Cathay" in November 1866 and remains the only woman documented to have served with the Buffalo Soldiers.
