The Twelve Innovators
Dr. Daniel Hale Williams founded Provident Hospital in Chicago in 1891 — one of the first Black-owned hospitals in America — and in 1893 performed one of the earliest successful open-heart surgeries, saving a stabbing victim without antibiotics or modern imaging.
Benjamin Banneker, a self-taught mathematician and astronomer, published celebrated almanacs, built a striking wooden clock by hand, and assisted in surveying the boundaries of Washington, D.C.
Garrett A. Morgan patented the three-position traffic signal in 1923 and invented a safety hood that he personally used to rescue workers trapped in a tunnel beneath Lake Erie in 1916.
Granville T. Woods, often called the "Black Edison," earned more than sixty patents, including an induction telegraph that let moving trains communicate — a breakthrough for railway safety.
Elijah McCoy invented the automatic lubricator that kept steam engines running without stopping. Popular tradition says demand for his genuine device gave us the phrase "the real McCoy."
Dr. Charles R. Drew pioneered techniques for preserving blood plasma and organized some of the first large-scale blood banks, directing the Blood for Britain program during World War II.
Frederick McKinley Jones invented portable refrigeration units for trucks — the technology behind Thermo King — transforming how food and medicine move around the world.
Lewis Latimer patented an improved carbon filament in 1882 that made electric light practical and affordable, and drafted the patent drawings for Alexander Graham Bell's telephone.
Dr. Christine Darden spent decades at NASA advancing the science of supersonic flight and sonic boom minimization — one of the brilliant minds celebrated in the story of NASA's "human computers."
Dorothy Vaughan supervised the West Area Computing unit at NACA (later NASA) and became an expert FORTRAN programmer, preparing her team for the computer age.
Dr. Patricia Bath, a pioneering ophthalmologist, invented the Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment, restoring sight to patients around the world.
Miriam E. Benjamin patented the gong-and-signal chair in 1888 — one of the first Black women to receive a U.S. patent — with a signaling concept later echoed in systems used to call for service.
